Introduction

Eloquent music
and spectacular performances,
Come and enter the magnificent
ocean of opera!

In 2025, the 20th anniversary of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center and the 20th opera produced by Artistic Director Yutaka Sado will be “Der fliegende Holländer” by Wagner, one of the greatest composers in the history of opera.
The story was inspired by a novel written by Heine based on a popular 18th century English legend of a Dutch ghost ship wandering the sea, for which the young Wagner wrote the script. The young Wagner meticulously expressed the story with dramatic music that later became a major musical drama.
This is the origin of many of Wagner's works, in which “salvation through love” is depicted in the mythical world of a large scale German fairy tale. The story unfolds clearly and quickly, making this a good choice for Wagner beginners. Please join us for a spectacular performance with magical music.

Der fliegende Holländer

Thanks to your support, the Hyogo Performing Arts Center is celebrating 20th anniversary in 2025. This will be the 20th produced opera, which has presented a wide range of operas in the hope of introducing people to the joys of opera in all its variety. Many of the first-time operagoers who attended our first opera production have become repeat patrons, and we believe that they have now become "opera connoisseurs". This year, we will perform Wagner's “Der fliegende Holländer” for the first time at the Produced opera to add a new work to our repertoire!

Wagner's operas are all about the music and let the orchestra tell the story behind the music. We had the pleasure of working with Michael Temme, the director of this year's production, on the 2018 production of “Der Freischütz”, and he was able to draw our audience into the world of German opera with his large-scale stage production. I thought, "If I am going to perform Wagner, I would definitely like to work with him." I am very excited to be working with him again and to be able to present the production through repeated meetings.

We have also invited wonderful singers from Japan and abroad to join the chorus and the orchestra to present a dreamlike opera. Please look forward to the birth of a new masterpiece that Hyogo can present to the world.
