Introduction

Eloquent music and spectacular performances,
Come and enter the magnificent ocean of opera!

The 20 th Anniversary of Hyogo Performing Arts Center’s The Start of the new Legend

In 2025, in celebration of HPAC's 20th anniversary and as the 20th opera produced by Artistic Director Yutaka Sado, will present “Der fliegende Holländer”, a work by Wagner, one of the greatest composers in the history of opera.

The story was inspired by a novel written by Heinrich Heine based on a popular legend in 18th century England about a Dutch ghost ship wandering the sea. The young Wagner meticulously expressed the story with dramatic music that later became a major opera.

This is the origin of many of Wagner's works, in which “salvation through love” is depicted in the mythical world of a large scale German fairy tale. The story unfolds clearly and quickly, making this a good choice for Wagner beginners. From the overture that sets the drama in motion to the famous arias such as "Die Frist ist um,(The time has come)" the Dutchman's opening monologue and “Senta's Ballad” you are invited to join the spectacle that unfolds with the magical music.

Synopsis

Love and destiny of the cursed The Dutchman and Senta

Daland, the captain of a Norwegian trading ship, comes across a ghost ship with blood-red sails. The Dutchman, the captain of the ghost ship, tells him that he is cursed by a devil to wander the seas, not allowed to die, and that he will be saved if he is allowed to come ashore only once every seven years and find the woman he loves. Dazzled by The Dutchman's treasure, Daland promises to bring his daughter, Senta, to The Dutchman.

Meanwhile, Senta has been fascinated by the lore of the “Dutchman wandering the sea” since she was a child. After their fateful encounter, Senta is ecstatic, and The Dutchman is convinced that “the time has finally come for salvation”...
